Guided Technical Dives/Rebreather friendly station

We can arrange expedition packages and guided tours for certified and experienced technical divers wishing to explore the depths of Utila's reefs, the deep North side walls of the island and the outer banks that lay between the islands and previously only visited by local fishermen. The island has developed it's infrastructure in recent years and this year a private company started supplying 110/220 volt electricity from a reliable 24 hour power plant on the island and since 2001 the diving community is supported by a local community recompression chamber and a large well equipped clinic is located on the island.

The dive sites on the North side of Utila, are in an area that is a protected marine sanctuary named 'Turtle Harbor', on the edges of a great wall that drops thousand and thousands of feet to the continental shelf and bears great similarities to the Cayman Wall. Along this wall coral ledges, cracks in the wall and caverns highlight how the islands were once much higher than sea level until raising ice age waters flooded the Bonacca ridge. We can arrange guided dives to explore the recesses of the wall using trimix mixtures to confirm reports of caverns in the 200 - 300 ft depth range and to also use normoxic and hypoxic gas mixtures to locate and explore off shore seamounts that have been viewed on depth finders from local fishermen at starting ranges of 60 to 180 feet.

Off shore from the North side of Utila in the deep waters of the trench live the Whale sharks and whilst the best months to see these gentle giants in their natural habitat are from May to September, they have been reported all year around. The Whale sharks off Utila have been reported to be as gig as 40ft and are often feeding off plankton and tiny krill fish that bloom in the warm waters during the summer months. Until now the closest that divers have been able to get to the Whale sharks has been by surface swimming and snorkeling trips but with training and guided trips available in SCR re-breather units the potential for aquatic interaction is yet to be realized.
